December Newsletter

Away We Go
Our 2017 Mission Team will leave Romney on December 29th. They will fly through Amsterdam and land in Nairobi on December 30th. We are praying for every blessing, safe travels and good health for all eleven travelers going to Living Hope High School for two weeks. The focus of this year’s team will be not only to help build the Healing Hut and vaccinate the student body, but also to teach about Christmas, i.e. Christmas in January. Bible studies, fun activities, and in-depth study on the birth of Christ, ending with a living manger scene (including a live camel). What a joyous time it will be! Bwana asifiwe!

Under the Bell
Everything on campus happens to the sound of the bell. One student is designated as time keeper each term. We get up and go to bed by the bell. We go to classes, to the bathroom, and to eat by the bell. Now under our big, brass bell, we have a hand painted picture of our school logo, right on the entrance to the Science Building. This school emblem portraying the Holy Spirit Dove reminds the students of God’s love, provision, and protection.

They're On Their Way
This past Sunday, December 18th, set a milestone in the lives of these students. Andrew Nyongesa, Mercy Kombe, Irine Mwiruka, Zabencier Kituyi, Ezekiel Alumasa, Samuel Wekesa, Phillip Wamalwa, Dishon Wamalwa, Moses Khaemba, Silvia Biola, Purity Wassey, David Pepela, Duncan Wanjala, Samuel Wanjoya, Naphtal Sikuku, Samuel Barasa, Collins Wasike, Alloys Juma, Ivan Chetambe, and Grivin Simiyu. This is our fourth graduating class from Living Hope High School. Our successful students are becoming a reality in Bungoma County and the country of Kenya. We ARE making a difference. Congratulations grads! Best wishes for the future and every blessing! Pongezi! They have worked so hard to get here but hakuna matata, it’s all done!

From The Ground Up
The permanent Healing Hut is well under way. A big thank you goes out again to all of you who have supported this effort with prayers, finances, and well wishes. The materials are all purchased and on site, and we are so proud that one of our own, due to graduate from college in Building Construction next year, is the foreman on the job, Nicodemus Simiyu. He travels sixteen hours from his college to come back to Living Hope to help during his breaks. This new building will be a six bed, small hospital for our students. It will also house some small offices for school staff. This will be a much needed addition and increase our health and well-being at Living Hope. God’s blessings to you Nic and the dozen or so students and former students that are helping. We couldn’t build this without them.

Living Hope High School is so blessed to receive the support of so many generous donors who have helped to make the Healing Hut a reality. We’ve had large and small donations and every single one has made a difference. Our hearts say “Thank you, thank you!” Special thanks goes out to Connie Damon and Central Schwenkfelder Church of Lansdale, Pennsylvania!

Here We Go Again
On January 16th Living Hope High School will again take in twenty new freshmen. These new students not only have outstanding elementary school scores, but they will already have been through an extensive interview and home visit process. Once again there were almost two hundred applicants for only twenty available spaces. These students are extremely impoverished and are very bright. Without this opportunity they would not get any further education, so we need twenty new sponsors at $88 per month. With each new class we start with a new mattress for each child, new pillow, new sheets, new blankets, new wash basins, new uniforms and a welcome kit of personal hygiene items. Many donations have made this possible. God bless each of you. Call Helen Markwell at 304-567-2254 if you want to sponsor a student.

We have eight college students who still need funding in order to continue their education. We’ve received $2,100 so far for this next term, January – April. We still need three times that much. We’ll be sending each dime as soon as we get it. If you are moved to contribute, please send your contributions to Riverton UMC at PO Box 23, Riverton, WV 26814. Please write College Fund in the memo line.

We wish you each a blessed and joyous Christmas and a healthy and happy New Year!
